My educational background:
I graduated from the University of Science & Technology of China (USTC) with Bachelor of Engineering (Computer Science) in 2001, and attained my PhD in computer science from Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) in 2005.
Where my passion for big data comes from:
In my opinion, big data is the combination of computer science, math and statistics to solve real life problems. As a computer science guy with great interest in math and statistics, big data is a dream-come-true field for me.
Tell us a bit about your experiences in Round 1 and 2. Did you think you would make it to the World Finals?
It was very fun to participate in Round 1 and 2, I really learned a lot from the experience. Many questions required me to think on my feet and come up with solutions fast. There are a lot of adrenaline pumping and great excitement, and I would say it is worth getting up at 7AM on Saturday morning to work hard for 4 consecutive hours.
To be honest, I thought my chance to make the World Finals was slim because I was competing with thousands of highly intelligent and driven participants around the globe for merely 12 spots. I have the honor to work with a participant in last year’s TEXATA World Finals daily and I know how smart and skilful he is, so I was extremely surprised and ecstatic to see the invitation email to the WORLD FINALS!
Tell us a bit about your life away from work:
I have two lovely and energetic kids, when I am not traveling, I would spend most of my time chasing after them. When I have some spare time for myself, I love watching and playing sports, soccer, basketball, football, field and tracks, swimming, ninja warrior, bar brothers, you name it.
A piece of advice I live by:
Have patience and work hard, good things would happen naturally.
